TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier on Monday announced a crackdown on scams targeting seniors, particularly those perpetrated by incarcerated individuals using contraband technology.

“Today, we’re here to announce a situation where we busted a lot of bad guys that have been using technology—cell phones, the internet and cryptocurrency—to scam seniors. Many of these individuals actually are already incarcerated,” Uthmeier said.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky Dixon, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass, Uthmeier highlighted the growing challenge of protecting vulnerable populations from technology-enabled crime.
The attorney general said many of the suspects are allegedly using illicit devices to engage in scams where seniors lose “hard-earned retirement” savings, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, by purchasing fraudulent services or entering into deceptive relationships.
